Dusty Bluebells Belfast
[2011, HD video, 5’10 minutes, audio and color]
Dusty Bluebells Belfast integrates audio and performative intervention as it relates to the ‘peace lines’ of Belfast, Northern Ireland and the traditions of childhood play there. The game, Dusty Bluebells, was memorialized in an early BBC film about children’s play near the walls in Belfast’s political districts during the era of The Troubles. The ‘peace lines’, originally built to separate communities, are today the subject of much scholarship, art, and tourism. In a capital city that has seen significant growth in recent years, the city center’s shopping district is also a strong tourist draw. Here in Belfast’s Corn Market, I staged a group performance of Dusty Bluebells, akin to a flash mob, performed without singing the lyrics. This video is part of my project On the Rocks, In the Land.
